Our 1st XI hosted Hammerwich on Saturday in what turned out to be the only Cannock game to survive the weather.  After winning the toss, captain Adam Benton decided to field first but the Hammerwich opening batsmen started strongly. The introduction of spin made the difference as Matt Robinson dismissed both Ben Traat (39) and Patrick Knott (24), Robinson finished with figures of 2-21. Hammerwich ended their innings on a competitive total of 165-5.

Connor Shingler and overseas player, Faizan Khan both scored 27 as Cannock’s reply got off to a solid start but a flurry of wickets took them from 83-2 to 105-9. It was left to James Caswell and Phil Heighway to block out the last few overs to secure a losing draw for the hosts. Caswell finished on 9 not out and Heighway made 1 not out as Cannock avoided defeat on the opening weekend.
